"Make the world a better place" is not just an aspirational statement. It encapsulates a deep sense of responsibility, urgency, and hope for future generations. For Singapore and the global community, this mindset is more important than ever, as we face numerous challenges that demand collective action and forward-thinking solutions. Here's why it's critical for our generation and what roles we can play in ensuring Singapore becomes and remains a better place to live.
1. The Interconnected World: The Ripple Effect of Our Actions
We live in a hyper-connected world, where the actions of one country, community, or even individual can have far-reaching consequences. Climate change, economic inequality, and global health crises like pandemics have shown us that no country can remain isolated from global challenges.
For Singapore, a country highly dependent on trade, natural resources, and a skilled workforce, the need to contribute to making the world a better place is both a moral and practical necessity. If global instability arises from unsustainable practices, inequality, or poor healthcare systems (eg: infectious diseases control), Singapore will inevitably feel the impact—economically and socially. Below are some of the things the Singapore government has done and some can be further improved.
What we can do:
Sustainability practices: Each Singaporean can contribute by embracing sustainable lifestyles—recycling, reducing waste, and supporting green businesses.
Policy advocacy: Support and encourage policymakers, companies, or even your own family to prioritize eco-friendly, inclusive, and health-conscious policies.
Global solidarity: Support global initiatives aimed at promoting peace, equity, and environmental preservation.
2. Rising Environmental Concerns: Safeguarding Our Future
Climate change is not a distant problem. It is here, affecting weather patterns, sea levels, and biodiversity. As a low-lying island nation, Singapore is particularly vulnerable to the effects of rising sea levels and extreme weather conditions. We should be assiduously taking immediate steps to protect our environment, ensuring that Singapore remains habitable and thriving for future generations.
Environmental issues also transcend borders. If we don’t actively engage in mitigating climate change, we risk inheriting a world where extreme weather events, food insecurity, and water shortages become the norm. This will affect not just the global population but Singaporeans too.
What we can do:
Green living: Adopt eco-friendly habits like conserving water, using public transport (Bus Mrt Walk), and reducing energy consumption (Turn on the fan and reduce dependence on energy guzzlers like air conditioners).
Community engagement: Participate in local environmental efforts, like tree planting or beach cleanups.
Advocacy: The government has the Green Plan for Singapore. (More about it https://www.greenplan.gov.sg/vision/) I strongly believe that we, as citizens should do more and support the move. Show your children, friends, and relatives by being a good example.
3. Social Equity: Building an Inclusive Society
We pride ourselves on being a meritocratic society, but the reality is that some groups still face disadvantages, whether due to income disparity, race, gender, or age.
If left unchecked, inequality can erode social cohesion, lead to unrest, and hinder national progress. It is crucial for Singapore to continue building a fair, inclusive society where every citizen has equal opportunities to succeed.
What we can do:
Volunteer: Work with organizations that support communities, whether through education, healthcare, or mentorship programs. (Something that I am passionate about).
Empathy and kindness: Be mindful of the struggles others face and offer help where needed.
Champion diversity: Promote inclusion at all levels—workplaces, schools, your neighborhood, etc Spread some love tank.
4. The Role of Technology: Shaping a More Connected Future
Technology has the potential to solve many of the world’s problems, from improving healthcare access to reducing carbon footprints through smart systems. However, technology also comes with risks such as privacy concerns, job displacement due to automation, and digital divides between those with access to technology and those without.
In Singapore, a tech-savvy nation with one of the most connected populations in the world, leveraging technology for good can play a significant role in making the world a better place. We can be leaders in areas like artificial intelligence (AI), smart city development, and fintech, setting examples of how technology can be a force for social and environmental good.
What we can do:
Promote responsible innovation: Ensure that technological developments prioritize ethics, human well-being, and environmental sustainability.
Upskill and reskill: Encourage continuous learning and adaptability in the workforce to prepare for technological shifts.
Digital inclusion: Advocate for policies that close the digital divide and ensure that everyone, including the elderly and underprivileged, benefits from technological advancements.
5. Civic Responsibility: Playing an Active Role in Society
A thriving society depends on the active participation of its citizens, and hence not just the responsibility of the government alone. Each of us has a role to play in our communities, workplaces, and beyond.
Singapore’s future will be shaped by how engaged its citizens are. Civic responsibility involves staying informed, volunteering, and playing an active role in improving local and global conditions. Apathy and complacency can lead to stagnation, while active engagement pushes society forward.
What we can do:
Stay informed: Be aware of the issues affecting both Singapore and the world and participate in meaningful discussions.
Volunteer: Give your time and resources to causes that matter, whether it’s helping the elderly, educating underprivileged children, or contributing to disaster relief efforts within and beyond our shores.
Donate: Sell or donate your unwanted gifts, donate blood, or take part in charity activities.
6. Preparing for a Changing World: The Role of Education
Education is one of the most powerful tools for shaping the future. By preparing the next generation to be global citizens, problem-solvers, and empathetic leaders, we ensure that Singapore—and the world—has the capacity to tackle the challenges that lie ahead.
Education must go beyond academic excellence. It should cultivate critical thinking, empathy, and a sense of responsibility toward society. The values we instill in today's students will determine the kind of leaders they become tomorrow.
What we can do:
Support holistic education: Encourage schools and institutions to focus on character-building and civic responsibility alongside academic success.
Be lifelong learners: As adults, embrace continuous learning and personal development.
Mentorship: Guide and mentor young people, instilling in them a sense of responsibility toward making Singapore a place we are proud to live in.
Our Role in Shaping a Brighter Future for Singapore
It is essential not just for the present generation but for the legacy we leave behind. In a rapidly changing world where global and local challenges are intertwined, Singapore has the opportunity—and responsibility—to contribute to a more sustainable, inclusive, and compassionate global future.
By playing our individual and collective roles—whether through sustainability practices, social engagement, technological innovation, or civic participation—we can ensure that Singapore not only remains a great place to live but also serves as a beacon of progress, fairness, and environmental stewardship. Our actions today will shape the Singapore of tomorrow, and the commitment to making the world a better place must start with us.
